Leave the Jokes to the Comedians

Leave the Jokes to the Comedians

by Amy Lignor

People fall into specific “categories.” Of course, these categories were set by someone else who basically just had a louder mouth or deeper pocket than the rest of the people speaking at the time.

In this article, however, there is no such thing as Democrat or Republican. Why is that? Because if you really believe that People fall into specific “categories.” Of course, these categories were set by someone else who basically just had a louder only one of these two particular categories consistently gave America the “best of the best” then you most certainly haven’t paid one bit of attention to history. Some Presidents were bad; others good. Yet all made mistakes. It came down to how they handled them as to how well they actually did their jobs. Some stopped wars; others created them.

To this day (and you can find this in any poll you’d like to look up), a man by the name of Abraham Lincoln remains the most “popular” President that the U.S. ever voted into office. Now…remember, this is a man who did oversee a war – the worst war for America, in fact, because it was simply us against us. Perhaps it was the way he fought; what he declared; how he handled some of the worst situations ever seen; whatever it was, Abraham Lincoln has kept his title of “Honest Abe” in the largest number of households across this country. (That’s both Democrat and Republican households, folks.)

The upside of America has always been freedom. There are millions who back up an idiotic campaign that then, perhaps four years later, stop hailing and start ‘turning away’ from. This works the opposite way as well. There are those who rail against an idea, law or movement just to – perhaps, four years later – state that they absolutely supported that idea and the others who did not were idiots. In other words, we have the freedom of indecision. We have the freedom to change our minds. And we have the freedom to make a joke if we feel like it. Perhaps right now, however, people are discovering that this recent joke has gone too far.

You’re all immigrants. I’ll give you a moment to let that sink in. Unless you are a Native American (keyword: native) reading this article, you are an immigrant. Somewhere in your background came a family who worked, who tried, who perhaps faced tyranny, oppression and WALLS that they could not get over in order to be free and at least get a “shot” at something better. Were all your relatives criminals? I doubt that. Did all of them ruin America? Actually, no. They started it. They made mistakes. They faced indecision, war, etc. But it was how they handled these situations that made them who they were at their very core. Some were wrong; you can bet on that. In fact, if you reach the age of five there’s a 100% chance you’ve made a mistake along the way.

Now, with something that really started as nothing more than a joke, a man wants you to believe that America is being completely and utterly destroyed by immigrants – illegal immigrants, of course. Therefore, in order to stop this, we shall simply “close our borders” to various countries and people. (Well, the countries that he does not have personal businesses operating in.) No offense to anyone out there, but crime will occur with illegal or legal immigrants at the helm. Why? Because there will always be crime. There will always be bad people who make bad decisions. That is a simple fact; nothing more.

In the driver’s seat, in 2017, is a man who knows how to collect cash but has absolutely no political background whatsoever. This is a man who is now walking through halls, marching past paintings of former Presidents who stood for something. Some stood for idiocy, I grant you that. All made a bad decision or two during their time. But many made this country what it is today: a place where people want to live. Can all that work be undone by a big mouth or a bad joke? I hope not.

The one we are supposed to hail now in America is one who has late night talk show hosts gaining more comedy fodder, and the likes of SNL placing him in the category of “Mr.” and most certainly NOT “Mr. President.” Will he have good days and do the right things? That’s a chance every voter who sided with this man took. And all those others who simply thought it was a funny joke at the time. In the end, walls and borders and a path of hate and dominance will most certainly destroy what this whole country was built on. By starting out this way, it would not be a stretch to see this country get to the day when the inscription on Lady Liberty will have to be changed. If so, maybe that’s the day everyone will see that the jokes should be left up to the comedians who get paid to make them. Because, whether Republican or Democrat, this one is absolutely not funny.

A Sermon to White America

by Michael Eric Dyson

St. Martin’s Press

Hardcover, $24.99

202 pages

ISBN: 978-1-250-13599-5

Book Review by Kam Williams

“America is in trouble, and a lot of that trouble–perhaps most of it–has to do with race. Everywhere we turn, there is discord, division, death and destruction.

When we survey the land, we see a country full of suffering that it cannot fully understand, and a history that it can no longer deny. Slavery casts a long shadow across our lives…

Black and white people… seem to occupy different universes with worldviews that are fatally opposed to one another… What, then, can we do?

What I need to say can only be said as a sermon… I offer this sermon to you, my dear white friends… I do so in the interest of healing our our nation through honest, often blunt, talk… Without white America wrestling with these truths and confronting these realities, we may not survive.

To paraphrase the Bible, to whom much is given, much is expected. And, you my friends, have been given so much. And the Lord knows, what wasn’t given, you simply took, took, and took, and took.

But the time is here for reckoning with the past… and moving together to redeem the nation for the future.”

— Excerpted from the Chapter 1, “Call to Worship” (pages 3-7)

Michael Eric Dyson teaches Sociology at Georgetown University, and is the prolific author of 20 best-sellers and a popular face on the TV talk show circuit. Many might forget that Professor Dyson got his doctorate in Religion from Princeton University.

In his new book, Tears We Cannot Stop, he reminds us that, “Although I am a scholar, a cultural and political critic, and a social activist, I am, before, and above anything else, an ordained Baptist minister.” That helps explain the profusion of captivating, flowery rhetoric whenever the brother’s been handed a microphone.

While his previous works were aimed at a black audience, this is his first intended to be read by whites. It is also written in a unique literary style, namely, as a sermon designed to keep Caucasians standing on their feet like an inspired  congregation of holy rollers.

The chapters are even laid out like a church service, starting with the “Call to Worship,” followed by “Hymns

of Praise,” an “Invocation,” and the “Scripture Reading” leading to the “Sermon,” and concluding with the “Benediction.” The meat of the message can be found in the Sermon section which opens with the iconoclastic suggestion that there is no such thing as a white race.

Professor Dyson’s point there is that whiteness is an arbitrary (as opposed to a scientific) construct which affords one group advantages and privileges at the expense of others. He argues that “whiteness is made up, and that white history disguised as American history is a fantasy, as much a fantasy as white superiority and white purity.”

If I were Dyson, I wouldn’t be holding my breath for a positive reception from his intended audience, given the ascension of Donald Trump and the celebration of rednecks in the runaway best seller, Hillbilly Elegy. He might be better off redirecting his sermon to the African-American community and changing his incendiary opus’ subtitle to “Preaching to the Choir!”

Can I get an “Amen!”

The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach

~ Book Review by Amy Lignor

Readers know that, every once in a great while, stories appear which are retained forever because of their capacity to overwhelm and delve into a person’s heart so deeply, that the tale becomes a part of them. Upon The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach, Book Review, WWII, suspense romance, historysaying this, it will come as no surprise to learn that behind the power, suspense, romance and history found in this one amazing creation, is author Pam Jenoff.

When we begin, Adelia Monteforte is put on a ship bound for America by her parents. The tide is turning and the end is near for their family in fascist Italy, and her parents want nothing more than for Adelia to be safe and have a shot at a life. This brave young girl arrives on America’s shores and ends up living with her aunt and uncle. Although they are a nice couple, they seem to be more than awkward when it comes to raising their niece. What they do for her, however, is head every summer to a place called Chelsea Beach. And here is where Adelia runs into her destiny. An incredible Irish-Catholic family, consisting of four boys who each have their own attitudes and emotions, envelop Adelia and bring her ‘in’ as part of their family. They all grow up, experiencing emotions from anger to envy to love; yet, even as they are having fun, the fear of WWII going on across the ocean hangs over them like a veil of darkness.

Adelia falls in love with the eldest boy, Charlie, but their hopes for a lovely life are dashed when Japan bombs Pearl Harbor and America enters the frightening battle. Pain occurs on Chelsea Beach which sends Adelia running straight into, and not away from, the war. Her job on a newspaper, helping children in an orphanage, dealing with the youthful emotions that have strengthened over time – all of these cause Adelia to find herself stuck in tragedies. The Germans seem almost easier to deal with, considering the fact that every time Adelia turns around, the past comes back to haunt her.

“The Kommandant’s Girl” was the first amazing novel by this author that dove into readers’ hearts and stayed there. With this new story, readers will once again be in awe of the power and beauty of these characters that will never let them go.

Wealth Secrets of the One Percent

A Modern Manual to Getting Marvelously, Obscenely Rich

by Sam Wilkin

Little, Brown and Company

Hardcover, $28.00

430 pages, Illustrated

ISBN: 978-0-316-37893-2

Book Review by Kam Williams

“Let us assume, dear reader, that you are interested in… obtaining a vast fortune… a fortune of yachts and personal helicopters, of diamond-encrusted light fixtures, of stately homes and private islands, of your name emblazoned upon landmark buildings and a charitable foundation… a fortune in the billions.

Wealth Secrets of the One Percent, A Modern Manual to Getting Marvelously, Obscenely Rich, Sam Wilkin, Book ReviewIf such a fortune were your goal, how might you set about obtaining it? That is the question this book seeks to answer… by researching the relatively small number of people throughout history who have become staggeringly wealthy and the methods that they have used to do so…

These narratives of success will demonstrate why it makes sense both to celebrate… and condemn… the wealth accumulated over the past decade by a fortunate few. And, more importantly, how you can join them.”

— Excerpted from the Introduction (Pages 1-5)

Donald Trump continues to maintain a comfortable lead in the Republican presidential nomination sweepstakes, regardless of what outrageous comments he makes. And, unlike Mitt Romney who tried to play down his wealth, “The Donald” is a narcissist who loves to flaunt the fact that he’s a billionaire.

How do you explain Trump’s popularity? Perhaps America is entering another hedonistic cycle similar to the one back in the Eighties when the country embraced the credo “Greed is good!” as espoused by the character Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street.

If you’d like to be among the big winners this time around, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Wealth Secrets of the One Percent: A Modern Manual to Getting Marvelously, Obscenely Rich. The book was written by economist Sam Wilkin who studied the habits of highly effective tycoons from antiquity to the present.

His comprehensive opus examines the affluent of many an era, including the Roman Empire, the robber barons of the 19th Century,

the Forbes 400 Lists of the 20th Century, and the “too big to fail” bankers condemned as corrupt by the 21st Century’s Occupy Wall Street movement..Before you start salivating at the prospect of accumulating wealth beyond your wildest dreams, you might want to consider the fact that the path to the top has often been paved with unscrupulous behavior.

For example, the filthy rich Romans maintained their competitive advantage over the masses by keeping most of their subjects illiterate and/or enslaved. As the book works its way to the present, we also learn about the compromised ethics of this or that icon: Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and so forth.

Thus, the secrets finally revealed in the last chapter come as no surprise in the wake of endless anecdotes about advantage achieved via bribery, monopolies and other nefarious deals with the devil. Prosperity indicted as a reward reserved for the ruthless.

American Pharoah Seeks Triple Crown at Belmont

American Pharoah Seeks Triple Crown at Belmont

By Burt Carey

American Pharoah faces the biggest test of his racing career Saturday at the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes.

The powerful 3-year-old bay colt with a knack for winning horses races is undefeated in his last six starts but will have to artfully handle a 1.5-mile track against a shortened field of seven rivals if he is to become the 12th winner of the Triple Crown and the first since Affirmed in 1978.

horse racing, Bob Baffert, history, Triple Crown, 147th Belmont StakesEleven horses have won horse racing’s Triple Crown, winning a series of three races — the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes — that showcase the world’s best 3-year-old thoroughbreds in May and June of each year.

It is one of the sporting world’s most rewarding and yet most difficult tests. Thirteen horses that won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes since 1978 failed in their Triple Crown bids at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, including California Chrome just a year ago.

While the horses change from year to year, some of the people behind or atop the horses remain the same. American Pharoah jockey Victor Espinoza is familiar with running for the Triple Crown. He was aboard California Chrome when he finished in fourth place at Belmont. He also rode Triple Crown hopeful War Emblem in 2002 who stumbled out of the game and crossed the finish line in 8th place at Belmont.

Trainer Bob Baffert is also a familiar face to race fans. Baffert-trained horses have won 11 Triple Crown races. American Pharoah is his fourth horse to try for the Triple Crown.

Oddsmakers and sports books have American Pharoah as a heavy 5-6 favorite to win at Belmont, but he will have to beat some stiff competition running on fresh legs. Pharoah is the only horse in the field to run both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Frosted, at 4-1 odds, and Materiality, at 7-1, are expected to challenge Pharoah at Belmont. Both ran in the Derby — Frosted finished 4th, Materiality 6th — but skipped the Preakness. Frosted is a proven strong finisher, having moved from the back of the field at Churchill Downs and earlier at the Wood Memorial, which he won.

Madefromlucky finished in second behind American Pharoah in March at the Rebel Stakes, and again lost to Pharoah in April at the Arkansas Derby, finishing fourth. Materiality and Madefromlucky are trained by veteran big-stakes horse trainer Todd Pletcher, who pulled a third horse, Carpe Diem, from the Belmont field early this week.

That leaves four horses that hope to spoil Pharoah’s Triple Crown bid: Mubtaahij (15-1 odds, finished 8th at Kentucky Derby); Keen Ice (20-1, 7th at Kentucky Derby); Tale of Verve (35-1); and Frammento (35-1, 11th at Kentucky Derby). Tale of Verve is the only other horse in the field that raced in the Preakness at Pimlico Downs. He finished second, seven lengths behind American Pharoah.

Noteworthy is that six of the 11 Triple Crown winners were the only horses to run in all three Triple Crown races. Also interesting is that six of the 13 horses since 1978 to win the first two Triple Crown legs were beaten at Belmont by horses with fresh legs.

If American Pharoah races into the history books on Saturday, he’ll join Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978).

Television coverage of the 147th Belmont Stakes will be on NBC from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, with live streaming at www.NBCSports.com.

Fear of Historical Destruction Grows

Fear of Historical Destruction Grows

~ Samantha Lewis

We talk about green “news.” We talk about unity and striving to come together in order to build a better life for the generations coming up behind. We replace, rejuvenate and rehabilitate when it comes to everything from habitats to cities and towns across the globe. We even have brought back endangered species, increasing wildlife numbers by placing them in various locales so that they can come back from the brink of being erased for all time. But there is one thing that we cannot bring back. No amount of unity or efforts is going to be able to bring back these things that are now destroyed. In fact, only the wand of Harry Potter could make it so. And these things are basically our heritage, memories, lives, and history.

Destruction of Mickiewicz Monument by Nazi Germany, August 17, 1940
Destruction of Mickiewicz Monument by Nazi Germany, August 17, 1940

Yes, there are madmen out there that need to be stopped. But it’s not only the destruction of life, which is horrifying in itself, but now they are taking tools and hammers and chisels in hand in order to destroy countless works of art, statues, and artifacts from history that will never, ever be replaced.

Colossal statues at Nimrud are now gone. These are statues that have been on this earth for over three thousand years. These winged statues are from Mesopotamia – the Cradle of Civilization – and now these relics are nothing but destroyed rock debris because of bulldozers being driven by the soulless.

History is a must – for any country or people. It is the place we all come from; it’s the magic and industry that shows who we download (2)are, where we began and how we grew. Did you know that out of seven Ancient Wonders in this world only one remains in 2015? Wars and Mother Nature took the rest. Of course, the rest have become nothing more than tales, pictures, perhaps even hopes with a little fairytale mixed in because certainly no one who walks the earth now was alive back then. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids that are familiar sites worldwide and…they are all that’s left of the ones written about. If they were to be destroyed, they will never return.

The Roman Coliseum could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 visitors. From the mighty gladiators doing battle to theatrical pursuits that brought people in by the thousands, the Coliseum was (and is) a location that must remain. It stands for a history that is gone now, but it is a relic that continues to shine because of the majesty and mystery surrounding it. It, as well as the Pyramid, has sustained damage over time. But if the locations could talk, they would be able to speak of earthquakes, fires, and battles between nations, countries, and people that should never have been fought. The Coliseum is that icon that stands for Imperial Rome; a time that will never be recaptured.

When it comes to the Mayan nation, Chichen Itza was one of the largest cities they called their own. Now, in 2015, people can walk amongst the ruins and be a part of a world that no longer exists. They can learn, educate themselves, and thrill at this true treasure of the world. A one-of-a-kind locale that supported one of the most diverse populations in the entire Mayan world.

download (1)The Taj Mahal was commissioned far back in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This stunning building still stands on the southern bank of the Yamuna River, and is recognized all over the world as the “The Jewel” that literally remains a link to India’s rich and long history that should never be forgotten.

Structures that have survived so many years, so many wars, so many people doing the worst they could to others over everything from politics to religious differences. These are not only architectural beauties, they offer up the education we need to remember the past in order to fix the future.

And far later than the rest, the United States and all that came to be here is basically new in comparison. But it is a strong past. It is a familiar past of a determined people. And no matter what, our iconic symbol will remain that lady who stands with her torch held high in the sky lighting the way. She talks of liberty, peace, and justice – which is exactly what everyone should believe in and understand.

We cannot replace what’s being destroyed. Our generation, perhaps even our species will be erased one day. And only our treasured statues, artifacts – the things that literally tell our story as a people are being destroyed…

Think about that.

Have Quarterbacks Become Second-Rate?

Have Quarterbacks Become Second-Rate?

 ~ by Amy Lignor

There are many out there right now wondering about the QB role in the NFL. After all, these are the stars. These are the guys that actually get the ball down the field to the superstars waiting to receive it. Quarterbacks still own the minds of most NFL
lovers. When thinking about the history of the sport, those quarterbacks and how they handled themselves on and off the field, are still the people other people follow, idolize, and really miss.

Even though mistakes are being made today, that idolization is still going on – whether right or wrong. But now, the season coming forward is a lot like Darth Vader walking the Imperial March (It’s okay, Star Wars fans understand what I mean there). The quarterbacks from the draft are looking a little wary and the QB’s already playing are looking a little weary.

images (2)When you have headlines about Peyton Manning talking about his retirement, warning signs flash. And now, when speaking about the Jets – a team that needs far more than an actual working QB – Michael Vick has come forward to let everyone know that he is in New York only to help, and NOT to take Geno Smith’s job.

Vick states that he and the rest of the team are there to aid Geno in becoming the best quarterback that he can be. The Jets offensive coordinator seems to agree, saying that signing Vick was literally to help Geno develop; however, there are other assessments and rumors out there that say different – that say Michael Vick will be given the job because Geno simply can not get it done.

Vick is supposed to make Geno compete, work harder, become better; he is supposed to be a grooming tool more than anything else, but everyone in the Jets organization – not to mention, the screaming fans who want to see their team do SOMETHING this coming season – know that Vick has the ability to take over that job and not look back. Whether he has a shot at bringing the Jets out of the basement however, is anyone’s guess.

Yes, Vick is 34, so he’s not fresh out of the draft and raring to go. But everyone knows that this position is like the Kentucky Derby – 1, 2, 3, 4 – is actually earned by the ‘colts’ not by a coach sitting at his desk placing these guys in the line-up. The heart of football quarterbacking remains – if you can do the job better than the other guy, you will see the field and he will see the bench.

Now…is there a QB in the draft, coming out of obscurity when it comes to the pros, who will light the field on fire? Well…there is one, and he is either the best of the best or a new showman who will make a complete arse out of himself when he realizes that pro and college are not alike.

The talk is large about Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, who has certainly already claimed legendary status in the Lone star State –Johnny_Manziel_in_Kyle_Field including winning the Heisman Trophy when only a freshman. It only took two seasons for Johnny to land 10,000 yards of total offense and 93 touchdowns, and the guy is a lot like Kap – he strikes hard and fast, adding shock value to the game.

So what on earth could be the downside? Shouldn’t all teams be rallying for this QB? Well, based on talents, yes. However, this is what some have referred to already as the ‘Johnny Depp’ of football – actually tagging him with the title: “Johnny Football”. He’s a wild card who could, perhaps, deep down, believe his own press and become that showman that coaches are uncomfortable with. Fans say TAKE HIM! Especially fans of teams that have not seen glory or a Super Bowl trophy since their great-great grandpa was a fan.

Along with ‘Johnny Football’ are Bortles, Bridgewater and Carr, who will supposedly be taken in the first-round – by who, it remains to be seen. But what coaches and fans should remember is that the lower men on the totem pole are sometimes (a great many times) the best of the best who actually do become legends.

Just in case you forgot, there was a boy from Michigan who was actually selected in the 6th round back in 2000. Seven QB’s were chosen before the guy, but the Patriots and the Patriots’ fans have laughed all the way to the Super Bowl – try five, actually, with three wins!

Tom Brady may not have looked like ‘Johnny Football’ at the time of his draft, but what he did do was prove that he could come out on the field and kick the butt of any team ‘Johnny Football’ led!

This fascinating documentary brilliantly blends interviews and archival footage to recall times of tolerance and inclusiveness when the identity of Egyptian Jews was unquestioned by their Arab compatriots and they were viewed as partners in nation building. Jews of Egypt captures fragments of the lives of members of the Jewish community from the first half of the 20th Century until their departure from Egypt in the 1950s. Not Since The Ripper Has a Serial Killer Been This Engrossing!

Author David Morrell Presents: Murder as a Fine Art

Murder may be a fine art, but this author has also proven that writing is the finest art of all – and he is the master of it.

No matter how suspense unfolds in the future, the time of ‘Jack the Ripper’ – mid-Victorian England – will always be a true favorite of TomMurderasaFineArtreaders everywhere. And in this new novel that same blend of deep, haunting emotions combined with odd police work and a level of the supernatural comes to life and literally jumps off the page.

One of the most notorious mass killings was the Radcliffe Highway Murders of 1811. Much like “The Ripper” when he came along, these murders had Londoners frightened so badly they didn’t even want to step out their doorways into the bustling streets.

One man, Thomas De Quincy, returns to London forty-three years after the murders take place. Thomas is famous for many things, including the fact that he’d once published an essay about the vicious attacks that basically spoke of murder being a ‘Fine Art.’

Almost the day he returns to London, a family is found murdered in a literal bath of blood – mirroring the killings that occurred in 1811. Apparently a crazed killer is utilizing the essay Thomas wrote a long time ago in order to make sure these new murders are state-of-the-art; treating them as Rembrandt would treat a paintbrush.

Thomas, however, is appalled that he is considered the one and only suspect in this new murder (although, with his background, it’s not really a shock). Utilizing his daughter, Thomas takes to the streets and investigates the past and present in order to clear himself, and finds that there are two of Scotland Yard’s finest who are willing to help him accomplish his goal. Or, perhaps, they are simply waiting for him to unveil the fact that he is nothing more than a murderer who (once again) wants to scare Londoners to death.

This novel is not a ‘tale of murder;’ in fact, using that phrase would diminish what this author has created. The scenes that are written literally pull the reader back in time – where they are not only walking the wet, dark streets of London beside a lunatic, but also find themselves witnessing murder with actual awe. Morrell is to be highly commended, because this is one thriller that is beyond thrilling.

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
